DeadEyes Eyewear

In 1933, as stated in the Wiseman Frame Catalog, "...based on the fact that if people can be persuaded to enjoy wearing spectacles, more people will be persuaded to take care of their eyes." As opticians, DeadEyes Eyewear's primary concern is the preservation of vision. Yet, taking into account this profound statement, it's evident that eyewear's appeal can have a unique effect on more than just the correction of vision.

Eyewear's history can be traced back a millennia, if not more. Yet, the concept of vintage eyewear, which would be construed as the celebration of the marriage between medical device and fashion design, takes root in post-war Europe. Certainly, perusing the annals of eyewear history, there'll be indications of fashion attribution to frame design pre-dating the 1940s, but the beginning machinations of the field are harbored in the late 1940s. With fashion houses of western Europe like Dior, Lozza, Tura, Francois Pinton, Oliver Goldsmith, to name few, they'll progress as they explore personality expression and material exploration in eyewear construction.

Gradually, eyewear design would mature: materials and concepts would vary, eyewear lines would enhance or vanish. Some eyewear lines would absorb lines meanwhile, some would be responsible for the creation, manufacturing and distribution of others. It was a remarkable progression in an industry's maturation. As this industry would develop, the appreciation for bygone eras would grow. That aforementioned celebration: an enthusiasm for a history was for the people and their creativity- a respect for the idiosyncrasy of era-specificity. Obscurity and ellusivity would become a commodity.

Oscar Wilde is attributed to having said, "Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery...", to which end, modern eyewear takes inspiration from the greats! Today, the designers of the world are found to be hailing to the catalogs of former design concepts. Is it to say, that to lead into tomorrow, you must refer to the past? Needless to say, vintage eyewear hails with genuine distinction for ideals of design. The exploration of materials and their applications was a frontier, laying the tracks for the industry of today and tomorrow. Yet, today's design only encourages the interest for yesterday. What came before? Who designed it and how, out of what? These are the questions that DeadEyes seeks to answer. For it is our maxim, 'We Resurrect the Dead', it behooves us to honor it.

1960, a young Cari Zalloni studies design at the Academy of Applied Arts in Vienna, Austria.
