American Optical Original Pilot Sunglasses
Perhaps the origin of the idea of the square aviator style itself, American Optical originally held the contract with the US Military until the mid-1970s to provide eyewear for military personnel. Originally composed of monel (a nickel-based metal), the current AO Pilot is composed of durable stainless steel and outfitted with nylon lenses, as opposed to the original mineral glass.
Originally called the Goggle-58, released in 1958, it became an instant pilot-donned frame, as made famous by John Glenn when he was photographed wearing the frame in the space module on the Friendship 7 Mission in 1962 of the Mercury 7 acclaim.
With its essential wrap and bayonet temple, the frame is designed for snug retention. The overall design with said wrap and bayonet temple, the frame uses a tensile strength to remain on the face without tensive discomfort. Furthermore, with the use of the bayonet temple, designed to remain upon the face with pressure without the use of the ears for balance, the fat-butt bayonet temple tip design is meant to be worn under compressing headphones and helmets without issue.
Beyond that of the design and history, the AO Pilot design can be viewed with a certain distinction as 'bad ass'! It's continuously being noted in varying media examples as the frame that the bad ass character will sport the AO Pilot, from Johnny Depp in Once Upon a Time in Mexico to Robert de Niro in Taxi Driver.
