Vintage Citizen Titan P Sunglasses
The celebrated Citizen Watch Co. Ltd out of Japan entered the eyewear industry in the late 1960s/early 1970s, but merely as a consultancy. With their expertise in engineering and metallurgical skillset, them as a manufacturing asset could be afforded eyewear departments like that of Dior, a benefit of developing collections. With their mechanical knowledge and experience in international distribution, it was in the 1980s (after over a decade of working with other eyewear entities) that Citizen eyewear engaged in developing their own collections, in-house at their Tahashi Factory.
The aforementioned metallurgical and engineering understanding had Citizen utilizing the highest regarded materials in construction and plating. It was an obvious maturation that Citizen would launch an eyewear line to an echelon of appreciation equal to that of their watches.
With designs they'd deem 'practical beauty' in minimalism and universality, the collection was becoming relative to lines of this period that engaged in industry diversification. It's why Citizen decided to launch their eyewear line that intrigues: their impulse in eyewear manufacturing was out of desperation, of sorts. As the age-old adage claims, "Desperation is the mother of invention." A slump in Citizen watch sales and an observation in how eyewear is made, Citizen applied their abilities in milling from watch tinkering to eyewear manufacturing, to create an eyewear line befitting to the reputation that Citizen watches has long enjoyed.
